Bone PDF
By:David Scadden
Published on 2018 by Perspectives Cshl

Bone plays far more than just a structural role in our bodies. It actively communicates with our brains, kidneys, and other organs, releasing and responding to signaling molecules that regulate biological processes such as glucose metabolism and lymph node development. Defects in these interactions may lead to osteoporosis, multiple myeloma, and other diseases or developmental flaws. Written and edited by experts in the field, this collection from Cold Spring Harbor Perspectives in Medicine examines our current understanding of the dynamic interactions between bone and other organs and systems in the body and the molecules and mechanisms that mediate them. Contributors discuss endocrine factors that act on bone (e.g., parathyroid hormone and sex steroids) as well as molecules that are secreted by bone and act on other tissues (e.g., osteocalcin and FGF23). The interplay between bone and the nervous, immune, and vascular systems is explored, as is the influence of gut microbiota on bone homeostasis. The authors also consider the diseases that result when homeostatic pathways are disrupted and how new knowledge of these pathways may be harnessed for the development of therapeutics. This volume is therefore a valuable reference for not only physiologists and endocrinologists but for all who are interested in diseases linked to the skeletal system.

Published on 2012-01-01 by Cengage Learning

Promoting a conceptual understanding and taking an integrative systems approach, ANIMAL PHYSIOLOGY 2E illustrates the individual organization as well as the collective interdependence of each complete physiological system. The text begins with chapters on integrative principles and on the genomic, molecular, and cellular basis of physiology, then proceeds to chapters on individual organ systems. For each organ system, evolutionary forces as well as current cellular and molecular research are discussed. To clearly illustrate system interdependence, each systems chapter contains a summary, titled Making Connections. To make the text even more accessible to students, the authors also incorporate a comparative approach to animal physiology, examining the basic physiology of many vertebrate and nonvertebrate animals as well as their primary diseases and ability to respond to environmental changes. This complete, concise guide enables graduate students in speech-language pathology to apply their knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of voice and speech production to the study of normal deglutition and dysphagia. The text examines the oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal components of the swallow mechanism, identifying both normal structure and morphology and structural and physiologic abnormalities. The Second Edition has been carefully updated to reflect current evidence and evolving theoretical frameworks for a wide range of diagnostic and treatment approaches, as well as the analytical process needed to effectively evaluate current and future research results. The text also features new material on neurological control, motor control, and learning, in addition to information on new technology and treatment techniques, such as electrical stimulation, free water protocols, Shaker exercises, and use of the National Dysphagia Diet. New and revised images clearly and consistently illustrate critical concepts of anatomy and physiology. The authors’ conversational writing style makes even complex material more engaging and easier to master and apply. This comprehensive, yet highly approachable text equips students to apply a systematic line of inquiry and evidence-based practice to diagnose and manage dysphagia accurately and efficiently. Anatomy of a Genocide PDF
By:Omer Bartov
Published on 2018-01-23 by Simon and Schuster

A fascinating and cautionary examination of how genocide can take root at the local level—turning neighbors, friends, and even family members against one another—as seen through the eastern European border town of Buczacz during World War II. For more than four hundred years, the Eastern European border town of Buczacz—today part of Ukraine—was home to a highly diverse citizenry. It was here that Poles, Ukrainians, and Jews all lived side by side in relative harmony. Then came World War II, and three years later the entire Jewish population had been murdered by German and Ukrainian police, while Ukrainian nationalists eradicated Polish residents. In truth, though, this genocide didn’t happen so quickly. In Anatomy of a Genocide Omer Bartov explains that ethnic cleansing doesn’t occur as is so often portrayed in popular history, with the quick ascent of a vitriolic political leader and the unleashing of military might. It begins in seeming peace, slowly and often unnoticed, the culmination of pent-up slights and grudges and indignities. The perpetrators aren’t just sociopathic soldiers. They are neighbors and friends and family. They are human beings, proud and angry and scared. They are also middle-aged men who come from elsewhere, often with their wives and children and parents, and settle into a life of bourgeois comfort peppered with bouts of mass murder: an island of normality floating on an ocean of blood. For more than two decades Bartov, whose mother was raised in Buczacz, traveled extensively throughout the region, scouring archives and amassing thousands of documents rarely seen until now. He has also made use of hundreds of first-person testimonies by victims, perpetrators, collaborators, and rescuers. Anatomy of a Genocide profoundly changes our understanding of the social dynamics of mass killing and the nature of the Holocaust as a whole. Bartov’s book isn’t just an attempt to understand what happened in the past. It’s a warning of how it could happen again, in our own towns and cities—much more easily than we might think.

Primates include a wide variety of mammals from the relatively ancient lineages of lemurs on Madagascar and tiny tarsiers of Southeast Asia to the gorillas of montane Africa. Of course, humankind are also primates - one twig on the primate evolutionary tree. Primate Anatomy: An Introduction, Second Edition is a succinct and readable survey of primatology focusing particularly on the anatomy of primates. Following an introduction, the chapters are organized by organ system. Also included are chapters dealing with reproduction, chromosomes, blood groups, and molecular studies of primate evolution. This book would be ideal for an introductory course in primatology and should appeal to both faculty and students who need a brief treatment of the essentials of primatology. * The only introductory text on primatology on the market * First time comprehensive survey of molecular primatology * Plenty of information that is not found in other textbooks * Up-to-date discussion of all aspects of taxonomy and anatomy * Many unique and informative illustrations, charts, and tables

The Story of the Human Body PDF
By:Daniel Lieberman
Published on 2014 by Vintage

In this book the author, a Harvard evolutionary biologist presents an account of how the human body has evolved over millions of years, examining how an increasing disparity between the needs of Stone Age bodies and the realities of the modern world are fueling a paradox of greater longevity and chronic disease. It illuminates the major transformations that contributed key adaptations to the body: the rise of bipedalism; the shift to a non-fruit-based diet; the advent of hunting and gathering, leading to our superlative endurance athleticism; the development of a very large brain; and the incipience of cultural proficiencies. The author also elucidates how cultural evolution differs from biological evolution, and how our bodies were further transformed during the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions. While these ongoing changes have brought about many benefits, they have also created conditions to which our bodies are not entirely adapted, the author argues, resulting in the growing incidence of obesity and new but avoidable diseases, such as type 2 diabetes. The author proposes that many of these chronic illnesses persist and in some cases are intensifying because of 'dysevolution,' a pernicious dynamic whereby only the symptoms rather than the causes of these maladies are treated. And finally, he advocates the use of evolutionary information to help nudge, push, and sometimes even compel us to create a more salubrious environment. -- From publisher's web site.
